of these school assembly programs below can be adapted for evening programs
and family audiences.
Talking Drums - This program
explores all the ways in which rhythms communicate in several cultures
around the world. Three guild members share the musical/linguistic
world of Ghana with traditional songs and instruments as they sing the
songs and even play the instruments on stage. Starting with the rich sounds
of West African drums, the artists explore their use in sending messages
across long distances and then follow the interaction of these drums with
other musical traditions in the New World. Did you know that the modern
drum set is an outgrowth of West African drumming? Learn the answer to
this question and more with this lively program of language and drumming.
Steel Drum Paradise - follow the
creation of the steel drum, from before its beginnings as a discarded
oil barrel, to a high-tech musical instrument. Through the story of the
Trinidadian steel drum, two guild artists demonstrate how music
grows and changes as it flows between different cultures. Learn how peoples
of african and caribbean cultures celebrate their heritage through music,
following their history from hand drumming, through "tamboo-bamboo" bands,
and into the modern steel band. Students will hear both old and new sounds
on congas, claves, brake drums, guiros - and even trashcans, and the artists
will create a steel drum band with your students on stage! One World Music
- Two Guild members take children on a trip around the world in music, songs
and stories. Students of all ages travel to many countries such as Brazil,
Vietnam, Italy, Russia, Cuba, Australia and more. This program continues to
expand as music from newly explored cultures is incorporated into the show.
One World Music is an excellent supplement to your Global Studies
curriculum. The Rainforest -
Take a musical trip into the rainforest with us. This highly interactive
show (using two Guild artists) uses music and sounds to explore the exotic
animals, plants and people of the rainforest. In addition to lots of fun
songs and stories, our musicians will create a "musical picture" of the
Forest Floor, Understory, Canopy and the Emergent Layer using students from
the audience and a wide variety of instruments from rainforest cultures
around the world. This program taps into multiple curriculum areas and
provides a great kick off to Rainforest studies. Regions of the US -
Two Guild artists will lead your students on a tour of the diverse regions
and people of the United States with a variety of songs, stories and
instruments. We will learn a Seneca canoeing song from the Northeast, a work
song from Southern plantations, a cowboy song from the Southwest, and much
more. The songs and stories surround occupations that are found in various
regions of our country. This program makes a great introduction to American
culture studies and can be adapted to a variety of elementary grade levels.
Come join us on this musical trip around the US. The Great Garbage Concert - Take
environmental education to its silliest! Presented by two guild artists,
this musical recycling show is overflowing with bumps, bangs, whooshes,
whirls, and, yes, even some sweet melodies on the 7-foot long, pile of
musical trash called the garbaphone! This show has been a favorite
among environmental educators across the country, teaching students how
recycling can be fun. Students will experience new musical sounds and
textures, while gaining valuable insight on managing our world's resources
in a creative and thoughtful way. An extensive book and cassette provide
many pre-and post-concert activities for the whole school. Take the gloom
and doom out of environmental education with this fun-filled, fast-paced,
earth-friendly show. World Music Residencies/Workshops (click here for sample residency lesson plans.) Mcclure Artist Guild's residencies offer students a hands-on, intensive
experience of music and storytelling from any of the assembly presentations--tailored
to your school! The artists offer extensive experience in integrating
the arts into existing school curricula through careful planning with
teachers, administrators and community scholars. Students will explore
expression of culture and history through various arts media, including
songs, storytelling, instrument building, musical games, drumming sessions,
and dramatic arts. Residencies culminate in a performance for the entire
community. The artists can also coordinate with all-county festivals
and regular concerts, offering world music performance with your students
in these venues. These residencies create a unique arts experience that
strengthens cognitive and expressive skills, and fosters increased value
of diverse peoples and cultures. Open to all students. Residencies may
last from one to ten days and can involve either one or two guild artists.
Our residencies are designed to fulfill the requirements of the NYS
standards for the arts. Here are some of our most popular residency topics:
Music Of Western New York- Share with your community an evening of old time music from our local history. Music on the hammer dulcimer, fiddle, jaw harp, banjo, and more will paint a musical picture of our past. Some of these instruments were played here over 100 years ago. Our artists will also share diary entries from the 19th century that share the stories of musicians, square dancers, soldiers in the war of 1812 and more. Come take a walk through our history! Panloco Steel Band - Create a caribbean celebration with the panloco steel band. Panloco will share a concert program of traditional and modern caribbean music or can provide the atmosphere for other learning activities. During our cold winter months, the people of trinidad have their carnival festival. Bring some warmth and sunshine into the new york winter by holding a multicultural festival with the sounds of steel drums. New World Christmas-This evening presentation explores familiar holiday music on instruments from around the world. This joyful concert celebrates the many different sounds of the holidays on instruments including hammer dulcimer, steel drum, cello, irish flute, middle eastern drums, and more. The evening will also include lots of caroling and audience participation. Share with us this multi cultural, musical celebration. |
