Watershed Voices: Water Is Me brings together a collection of videos that illuminate Glenn McClure’s unique approach to transforming scientific data into music. Through these pieces, you’ll hear how watersheds, climate patterns, and human experiences become sonic landscapes. Start with Glenn’s explanation of his sonification process, then explore the stories, sounds, and creative discoveries that flow from this remarkable fusion of art and science.
This series of videos explore the creation of a new folk music opera, Wine and War, by composer Glenn McClure that shares the dramatic Civil War era veteran story of NY state’s commercial winery.
FivebyFive’s latest album has made a debut on Billboard’s Classical Album chart, appearing at the #2 spot! Glenn McClure’s piece, Totality, is the first track.
Performance on January 20, 2024 by fivebyfive at the Strasenburgh Planetarium in Rochester, NY.
The melodic content of “Totality” is drawn from the sonification of “duration” data that shows the varying time intervals of totality during an eclipse at selected locations along its path. Sonification is the mathematical translation of numerical data points into musical pitches and rhythms. This melody, drawn from the data describing its path, provides the unifying motifs that recur throughout the piece.
Watershed Voices will create musical works that celebrate regional biodiversity (through sonification of scientific data) and human diversity (through writings from diverse cultural voices both past and present), thereby engaging audiences in both New York State and Quebec in a shared artistic experience of our shared Champlain Basin.
