“Bury Me in a Free Land” is a powerful work for women’s voices and string quartet, set to a powerful yet simple text by abolitionist Frances Harper, expressing a driving and earnest desire not to end life and be buried in a land of slavery. The lyrical sounds of treble voices mix with a pizzicato string quartet, which translates the West African tradition of layered rhythms of hand drums, bells and shakers.

“The Emancipation Oratorio” commemorated the 150th anniversary the abolition of slavery by act of Congress, combining texts and music styles from West Africa, Europe and the US.
