We Want More Soul is a setting for SATB choir and soprano soloist of a text by Frances Harper, a prominent female voice of the abolitionist movement. Harper”s words, “We want more soul, we need more earnestness, integrity and unselfishness,” like other voices of 19th-century abolitionists, continue to ask all of us today to consider how we collectively live beyond individual benefit. The second half of the piece offers a call to action, saying “we are ready and willing to lay down time and talent and money to do this.”

“The Emancipation Oratorio” commemorated the 150th anniversary the abolition of slavery by act of Congress, combining texts and music styles from West Africa, Europe and the US.
